"Weasels Ripped My Flesh", with its funny cover, is a record by Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention from 1970. The album will be one of the last (if not the last, if I'm not mistaken) by the Mothers in their classic lineup, namely Jimmy Carl Black (drummer and Indian of the group), Roy Estrada (bass), Bunk Gardner (saxophone), Motorhead Sherwood (saxophone), Ian Underwood (saxophone), Zappa (guitar, vocals), Ray Collins (vocals). Don 'Sugarcane' Harris (violin) and Lowell George (guitar) contribute to the album, which will be followed, the same year, by Chunga's Revenge, a more or less solo album by Zappa (at least, released under the name Zappa only). The title track that names the album concludes it, and consists of a concert encore (live recorded track) made up of infernal noise and quite unbearable for delicate ears, 2 minutes of carnage that would be the way Zappa chose to challenge the famous sacred tradition of encores at the end of concerts. The rest of the album is recorded half in the studio, and half live, alternating between very bizarre experimental pieces and much more conventional and accessible tracks, like the cult classic "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama". The album is not the easiest to access by Zappa (but next to "Lumpy Gravy" or "200 Motels", it's still quite accessible!). The album aims to be a sort of sequel to "Burnt Weeny Sandwich", a 1970 album quite in the same spirit. The two albums will also, for a time, be sold together as a double album. Totally crazy and free ("Oh No", "Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Sexually Aroused Gas Mask", "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue", "Toads Of The Short Forest"), "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" is, without being one of Zappa's peaks, a frankly good record, even very successful, to recommend to fans. 43 minutes (a little less on vinyl, "Didja Get Any Onya ?" having been extended by half for the CD - on vinyl, it lasted only 3.42 minutes) of pure Zappa madness from the great era!
