Demetrio e Polibio, Semiramide, Adelaide di Borgogna... The virtuosic countertenor from Argentina, Franco Fagioli, dedicates his new album to the lyrical works of Gioachino Rossini. The Italian composer has always been fascinated by high male voices but only composed two roles for castrato. Fagioli has deliberately renounced these characters for his Rossini album, preferring to focus on the travesti roles that approach sexual ambiguity from another angle; a good number of male characters have been assigned to women. Fagioli wishes today to restore the purity and miraculous agility of the castrati that Rossini was said to appreciate so much. The entirety of these arias demonstrates the technical and vocal range of the lyric singer, making him one of the most extraordinary talents of his generation. Fagioli is the first countertenor to have completed his training in his home country at the prestigious Instituto Superior de Arte of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
