As early as 1824, when the young composer was only 15 years old, he dedicated his sonata in E-flat to Baron von Kaskel, a good amateur clarinetist, giving him a part that is quite easy but very melodic, while the much more demanding piano part was likely intended for himself. In 1832, he met the famous Baermann father and son, virtuosos of the clarinet and basset horn, who were passing through Berlin on their way to Russia and requested a new piece to take with them. Thus, the first Konzertstück Op. 113 in F was born; following the success of the piece, the Baermanns asked for a counterpart to this concise yet brilliant and unique work. The young Félix sent them the second Konzertstück Op. 114 the following year in Königsberg. Originally written for clarinet, basset horn, and piano, these two works are often performed today in their orchestral version. This disc is completed by several Romances sans paroles, transcribed from the solo piano version by three great clarinetists, Robert Stark (1847-1922), the late Thea King (1925-2007), and Dietrich Seebohm (born in 1930). All these pieces are perfectly suited to the melodic voice of the clarinet.
