However, the disengagement he felt from his homeland while creating his last album — a constant sense of freedom of place and space, superbly rendered in tracks like \"Death of a Migrant\" — is perceptible in Laband's desire to instead illuminate aspects of his own life. \"For this album, my source material became almost autobiographical as opposed to the African statements I worked with before,\" explains the artist. \"I sampled a lot from documentaries about the crack epidemic of the 80s in impoverished African-American communities and I think my work speaks unapologetically for lost and marginalized people, for those who are the forgotten victims of the war on drugs.
