2025 will mark ten years since Drew Lustman, a.k.a. FaltyDL, last released an album on Planet Mu. In the interim, he has run his own label, Blueberry Records, acted as a house producer for Mykki Blanco, and become a father. The best things are born out of play, and it is Drew’s relationship with his young daughter that brought about this playful side of his music. The album in question, ‘Neurotica’, expresses Drew’s delight in creating tracks so energetic that they make you want to move. It is a heady, fast-paced rush of adrenaline; the music is fresh and inviting, and most importantly, joyful.“In the summer of '24, we were in Catalonia. My girlfriend, our little girl, the old folks. Days at the village pool, afternoons riding dirt bikes. In the evenings, I made salads. Simple things. Good things. One afternoon, lying down, phone in hand, I saw a friend post a GRWM. The music behind it stopped me. A song hooked me. It was 'Secret' by Mietze Conte, a rhythmic euro-pop dance track, like a soft, light gabber with a childish voice. I listened to it again. Twenty times over the next few days.” “I started recording, getting fast, bright, explosive sounds. 185 to 200 BPM. I wrote them quickly — half a day per track. In between, I slowed down. I let myself breathe. Mike Paradinas helped shape the album, his ear guiding the flow. I tested the tracks. I played them for kids barely out of diapers and adults who still move like they do.” It worked, for all ages. I kept it simple. Just two rules: move and don't look at my phone. Cut the vocals like before.
