Eugene Istomin - the concerto and solo recordings

Eugene Istomin (1925-2003) is one of the greatest American pianists, highly recognized and esteemed by his colleagues for the certainty of his playing, his remarkable virtuosity as well as the grandeur of his repertoire. He would have turned 90 in 2015, and this is the opportunity for Sony Classical to release this box set which, for the first time, allows us to hear all of his Columbia recordings, whether they are solo recitals or concertos. Eugene Istomin was born in New York in 1925 to parents who emigrated from Russia. He studied in his childhood with a descendant of a student of Franz Liszt, Kyriena Siloti, before his time at the Curtis Institute where he worked with Rudolf Serkin. He made a spectacular debut in 1943 with the same week, his solo presence at the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. It was in 1950 that he participated for the first time in the Bach Festival of Prades and formed a long friendship with Pablo Casals on this occasion. A spectacular career followed, which he extended to the trio he now formed with Isaac Stern on violin and Leonard Rose on cello. His last recording dates from 2001.
