With "Six Strings Under," the pianist, who has collaborated with Joe Lovano, Claude Nougaro, Stefano Di Battista, Aka Moon, the Belmondo brothers, and Ibrahim Maalouf, certainly decides to make a kind of declaration of love to this instrument that has been a part of his entire life. But not only that: in addition to a little nod to the famous series "Six Feet Under," of which he is a fan, this album marks a return to acoustic and instrumental formats, two areas he had neglected for several years to focus on more electric albums filled with vocal guests.
In "Six Strings Under," the winner of the 2011 Victoire du Jazz for 'Best Album of the Year' wants to celebrate the guitar in all its forms. Not just the art of standards dear to Thomas Bramerie or Hugo Lippi (as on the 1930s classic, 'Stomping at the Savoy'). Not just the Gypsy spirit embodied by Rocky Gresset like no other. We also find Fela-esque Afrobeat guitars ('Boda Boda'), Radiohead-esque pop guitars ('Daydreaming'), and Jobim-esque bossa guitars ('La Mangueira,' a composition dedicated to his Brazilian friend and collaborator Marcia Maria, who passed away in 2018). Even better: there's even a miniature mass dedicated to English rock guitars—but without a guitar! On the cover of David Bowie's masterpiece 'Space Oddity,' Eric Legnini plays it almost solo.
