Songs from Suicide Bridge

The Colorado Bridge, connecting Pasadena to Los Angeles, nicknamed 'Suicide Bridge', has been the scene of a great many suicides. The deserted bridge is the setting for a photoshoot featuring songwriters ERIC CABOOR and DAVID KAUFFMAN, which resulted in the photo and title adorning the cover of their majestic debut album, Songs From Suicide Bridge, released in 1984. CABOOR and KAUFFMAN met in Los Angeles 'coffee shops.' Each of them used to play in front of often almost empty rooms. According to Kauffman, "they were two lonely people who joined forces." After two years of trying to find a label, they gave up. With the industry focusing on new wave or pop, a folk-rock band had no place. As a defiant gesture, they decided to record their darkest album. Recorded on a 4-track, Songs From Suicide Bridge was released on their label, Donkey Soul Music. Only 500 copies were pressed. It is a work of breathtaking beauty, which largely deserves its place among the greatest Americana albums. Ultimately, a lot of hope can be perceived within it. "People told us these songs were depressing," CABOOR tells Sam Sweet for the booklet of this reissue. "But it wasn't depressing for us. Playing these songs in a small room made us feel better."
