Folias Americanas

The American journey of Marin Marais with the Ensemble Vedado!For this program, the Cuban composer Calixto Alvarez offered us a greatly enriched version of his Folias Americanas, originally composed in 2012 for viola da gamba and harpsichord and inspired by the Folies d’Espagne, an emblematic piece by Marin Marais. In these Folias Americanas, each variation is composed in a musical genre from the Americas: chacarera, tango, conga, blues... follow one another to offer us a rich panorama of the American musical heritage. For the instruments, we find three viols, a baroque guitar, and an obbligato harpsichord, in resonance with Marais’s Suites à trois violes. Because this music of the Americas is that of rhythm, we added percussion (claves, maracas, guijo...) in certain variations, to reinforce its character. With this album, the Ensemble Vedado continues its tribute to Marin Marais.
