In the 16th century, this richly decorated codex offered just over a hundred musically annotated pieces, drawn from quite varied registers: pastoral and popular songs, evocative pieces about battles, humorous and drinking songs, as well as songs about romantic feelings. Most were composed in the second half of the 15th century. The manuscript itself dates from the following century and belonged to Charles III of Bourbon. The Manuscript or Chansonnier de Bayeux (circa 1500) is considered the first book of French popular songs. The melodies of the manuscript are arranged by Emmanuel Bonnardot and Barnabé Janin into polyphonic dance songs, in the improvised style of the time or modernized. A few regional songs from France complete the program, thus offering a new perspective on traditional song.
