From 1684 to 1686, Marc-Antoine Charpentier offered each year a Christmas pastoral to his patroness, Marie de Lorraine. With the death of little Louis-Joseph, the last heir of the lineage, the figure of the Child Jesus would take a central place in the devotions of the Guise. Born from this context, the pastorals and antiphons of this program are at the crossroads of the profane and sacred, the popular and the learned.
