It is a pleasure to find him again in an album dedicated to Goyescas. In the booklet text, he writes that this work is the first opera for piano. It is true that it possesses the theatricality, the lyricism that alternates with pages of recitatives, and the complex organization of leitmotifs that recur throughout the 6 pieces. Turning away from traditional pairings, he offers us various interludes between Granados's scenes, thanks to ancient pages that have nourished Spanish musicians. We find Scarlatti (who wrote his Sonatas for the future Queen of Spain), but also Padre Soler (whose Sonatas are very unjustly neglected). Throughout this theatrical journey, the pianist demonstrates great elegance: he pays attention to the clarity of the discourse, which never muddles the dense superpositions of the writing. However, he does not neglect the drama in the scene of Death, nor the lunar mystery for the specters of the epilogue. The Baroque Sonatas are chosen to extend these dramatic atmospheres. That is why one should not seek a musicological perspective here. It doesn't matter if not all repeats are respected as long as these pages serve the interpreter's purpose, which is to take us on a journey through a fantasized Spain, a Spain of theater, court, and dance, where young nobles seduce each other, disappear but return to haunt the stage before Scarlatti gracefully lowers the curtain.
