Elvis Presley (Tupelo, Mississippi, January 8, 1935 - Memphis, Tennessee, August 16, 1977) was the first true rock & roll star and, as such, had an enormous cultural impact on the history of music. He performed with a natural sexuality that made him a teen idol and a role model for generations of cool rebels. His energetic performances, combined with a singularly powerful blend of influences during an era of transformation in American society, made him extremely popular and controversial. Years of drug abuse deteriorated his health and led to his death in 1977 at his Graceland home at the age of 42.
