Abeg No Vex

Description

Ekiti Sound is at the forefront of a new musical dialogue between London and Lagos. His debut album forges new musical pathways, soldering together English sound system culture (drum & bass, dub, dubstep, funky house), hip hop, Afrobeat, and Nigerian popular music. The album integrates successive layers of musical history, boldly rubbed and superimposed to create a rich sonic collage. Roots play a key role for Leke (aka ChiF), the musician/producer/singer behind the project. His chosen name pays homage to the Yoruba state of Ekiti in southwestern Nigeria (where his father is from). The album Abeg No Vex (meaning "don't take it the wrong way" in Nigerian slang...) sees the low frequencies of London sound systems clash with various Nigerian styles that immersed Leke's childhood, including Fela Kuti's music, omnipresent at family gatherings since he was eleven. "A dazzling syncretism between Chicago house and African polyrhythms..." -TRANSMUSICALES "An ultra-mixed and energetic sound" - Radio NOVA. "With Ekiti Sound, West African bass music vibrates" - FIP. "A rhythm all in sub-bases and programming inspired by traditional drum patterns" - FRANCE INTER.
