Description

In 2023, Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke toured Europe—France, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland—for a series of improvised concerts, marking their first duo tour outside of Japan. *Pareidolia*, their fifth collaboration, is an extension of this: a remix conceived from the live recordings of these performances, where each evening served as raw material for the next. The result: a shifting sensory journey, blending electronic textures, reworked acoustic sounds, and flashes of flute or harmonica, reassembled into a vibrant patchwork. The duo operates without sheet music or prior discussion, letting the moment dictate the direction. Improvisation becomes their common language, and *Pareidolia* is its freest synthesis: an edit that mixes, for example, Jim in Paris with Eiko in Dublin, in an ever-renewed play of dialogues and resonances. The captured sounds—sometimes even those of the audience or the venue—intertwine in this moving composition, where accident becomes intention and disorder, structure. If the album sometimes seems to obey an invisible form, it is precisely because it never tries to impose one. As its title suggests—pareidolia referring to the tendency to see meaning in chaos—this work invites active, even introspective listening. Each listener will project their own images onto it, like discerning a face in the clouds. A labyrinthine album, with a subtle balance between controlled chaos, total freedom, and sonic vertigo.
