«Each musical interval reaches its peak at different moments in the history of Western tonal language.»
After reflection, each composer would, in my opinion, unconsciously have their own preferred interval, a quintessence of their style summarized in two notes, thereby influencing each current in the history of music.
Thus, the major third particularly resonates with me in W. A. Mozart during the so-called classical period, where I feel a perfect balance of tonal language: its golden age. Then the sixth and the octave come to mind with Brahms, the fifth and its harmonic role with Debussy, the major seventh for Satie, the tritone with Bartok, the perfect fourth with Coltrane, etc.
Also, the central idea of my compositional project strikes me as an obviousness: “To write an entire opus to celebrate the intervals, in which each composition is an offering to one of the 12 intervals of tonal language contained within an octave.”
