Earth Infernal is a pure product of the era that spawned it and could only be the work of SATAN. Having produced trailblazing heavy metal throughout the 80s – and reformed in 2011 – their sixth full-length album maintains the high standards they established long ago, and it might be their most topical album yet. Guitarist Russ Tippins: “Our Earth is now infernally hot. Almost irreversibly. We are on a one-way trip to hell and we’re taking our children and their children with us.” As ever, the band recorded the record at First Avenue in Newcastle, with Dave Curle handling engineering and mixing. In an age where metal records are over-polished and digitally perfected, Satan take a different route and embrace the mistakes made during tracking. “The fuzzy note, the missed beat of a drum roll, the power chord not quite struck full. These all add up to an engaging sound. It’s real. It seems like anyone can achieve perfection now, but, precisely for that reason, perfection doesn’t really mean anything anymore.”
