Thy Burdens is a natural evolution of the Drunken Prayer catalog. The album is an homage to the fiery and sublime church music that means so much to the musicians who worked on it. Musically, it’s pure country-soul with horns, shouts, and plenty of groove. Songs range from the eternal to the obscure. There are tributes to all manner of musical artists: Thomas Dorsey, Martha Carson, Snooks Eaglin, Ralph Stanley, The Zion Travelers, Leon Payne, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Hank Williams, Odetta, Dylan, and traditional songs too ancient to credit. There are a handful of Drunken Prayer albums, all with semi-religious overtones and imagery, but this one is the first to be fully gospel—a prophecy revealed.
