Scarlatti romantic before his time? The almost 600 keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti have long been based on uncertain sources. This exceptional corpus, both in its scope and its language, has given rise to different interpretations over the ages, as various editions testify. It is in this context that, in 1864, the anthology of 18 sonatas by Scarlatti by Hans von Bülow is situated, presenting them through an interesting romantic prism in many respects. Pianist Giulio Biddau offers a comparison of this work with a recent critical edition, in a double album confronting the two approaches.
