A global spearhead of soul and punk, the birthplace of techno, a fallow city learning to rebuild itself, Detroit represents values close to those espoused by Jarring Effects for years: knowing how to recover from crises and develop collective projects. During a concert in Paris, the Jarring Effects team had the pleasure of meeting Invincible, a militant rapper from Detroit. Charmed by the project but unfortunately unavailable to participate, Invincible was nonetheless able to direct our teams towards other artists from the city, such as Finale or Miz Korona. Jarring Effects had also wanted to work with YoggyOne, a talented producer close to the collective for years, who notably collaborates with the tour promoter AFX-Booking. Moreover, passionate about the Detroit hip-hop scene, YoggyOne represented the ideal artist to implement The D.Lights project. Quickly fully invested in the adventure, he was able to suggest producers and rappers, such as Charles Trees or Selfsays. Another artist from Detroit but coming from a more electro universe, Shigeto also appreciated the project and wished to collaborate, by being present on the album, but also by suggesting several artists with whom he usually works. The first meeting took place in September 2014 in Detroit, when Céline Frezza - label manager and JFX studio manager - went to meet the different artists to imagine the group of tomorrow. As meetings progressed, five male and female artists were identified to participate in the project. Chosen for their talent, but also for their ability to adapt to a group and their civic engagement, the adventure took shape with Miz Korona, Finale and Intricate Dialect. In parallel with the musical part of the project, the documentary The D., directed by Arno Bitschy, provides a complementary vision by painting a portrait of Detroit through the eyes of the aforementioned artists. All born in this city, they grew up at the same time as musical currents like soul or techno were born, but also suffered the now famous bankruptcy that struck the flagship city of the industrial era of the United States.
