Dirt Buyer III opens with a track seemingly dedicated to baseball, but Joe Sutkowski quickly shifts the focus to childhood expectations and the quest for autonomy. This introduction lays the foundation for an album centered on formative dislocations and how they reappear in adulthood, within a visceral and introspective narrative. Written amidst personal turmoil, the album brings together over two dozen tracks composed after Dirt Buyer II, long before its 2023 release. Ready to turn the page, Sutkowski finds new sonic breadth here: raw acoustic guitars, electric riffs that are sometimes clear, sometimes abrasive, a breathless drumbeat, and a voice that wavers then asserts itself. Thanks to a more muscular production, he delivers the most immersive and accomplished version of his aesthetic. In October 2023, Sutkowski joined Hayden Ticehurst and Chris Cubeta at Studio G in Brooklyn to select the eleven strongest tracks from his demos. The trio patiently shaped the album, refining it over an entire year. Proud of the result, Sutkowski considers Dirt Buyer III to be the most faithful representation of his current work and his progression as a songwriter.
