The interminable and lyrical \"Telegraph Road,\" a half-ballad, half-blues track that opens the album, is the perfect vehicle for its scattered guitar parts, supported by organ layers that have aged well. But one remains captivated by the impeccable instrumentation and the ear-pleasing flourishes like its crescendo finale (even more spectacular in concert, as evidenced by the version included in \"Alchemy\"). The song was inspired in Knopfler by a highway of the same name located in Michigan, running north from Detroit. Some critics (disingenuously, of course...) declared at the time that Dire Straits was veering into progressive rock; one of them felt like he was hearing Emerson Lake \u0026 Palmer with blues roots. An exaggerated but not false remark... especially when considering the closing track \"It Never Rains.\" The album as a whole provides excellent background music for other activities like washing dishes or grocery shopping. Half as long but just as drawn-out, \"Private Investigations\" follows, whose Hispanophone acoustic piano\/guitar intro used to make lighters flick and arms wave in concert halls. \"Industrial Disease\" shows a hint of social conscience from this former reporter turned millionaire: choppy guitar riffs against a backdrop of organ layers to recount the decline of British industry under the Thatcher era, and its quota of factory closures and strikers.
