Finally! Here is the sixth studio album recorded by Dinosaur Jr. since their triumphant return twenty years ago. Composed of short but intense sessions throughout a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, There Near was almost entirely recorded by the band's original trio: Murph, master of powerful rhythms, Lou Barlow, a true human whirlwind on bass and vocals, and the inimitable J Mascis, on guitar and vocals. Some piano and organ parts are provided by local musician Ken Mauri. From start to finish, the album overflows with energy. Defining the essence of Dinosaur Jr.'s sound has never been an easy task. It’s an immediately recognizable blend of nonchalant vocals, incisive guitars, and an animalistic rhythm section. But these elements come together to form a whole that is much more magical and exhilarating than the sum of its parts. On There Near, J Mascis's guitar sound is even wilder than usual, particularly thanks to a 1970s Mesa Boogie MK I amplifier he just acquired. "I bought the same amp that Chris Dixon had when we recorded our first album," he explains. "Chris recorded us at his home with that amp. It produces a very particular sound that I hadn't found in a long time, and I really wanted to capture it on this album." When asked about the sometimes enigmatic nature of his lyrics, J Mascis confides: "I don't always know what a song is about when I write it. Its meaning tends to reveal itself later. I simply use the words that work, often influenced by the esoteric readings of the moment. I try not to over-intellectualize it all. Some say this album is brighter, but that’s probably related to my way of singing, as lyrics like those in 'No Friends' might suggest otherwise. I generally write in the third person. It all remains fiction." While There Near does indeed present a slightly softer side in some of J Mascis's lyrics, even a ballad as delicate as "Put It Down" ultimately explodes in a surge of distorted guitars. It’s simply in the nature of the band. The two tracks written by Lou Barlow, "Blowin' Up" and "No One's Ready," evolve in more soothing musical atmospheres, but their lyrics resonate as sharp critiques of our times. As often with Lou, welcoming melodies conceal highly incisive lyrics. There Near thus continues the impressive series of major albums by Dinosaur Jr. These new tracks promise to take on their full dimension on stage, propelled by their massive riffs alongside the band's classics. While waiting to see them in concert, There Near already establishes itself as an essential companion on the road.
