Dhafer Youssef (born November 19, 1967 in Téboulba, Tunisia) is a composer, singer, and oud player. Very young, he developed an interest in jazz and became involved in avant-garde and world music. Dhafer Youssef has released five solo albums and has also worked extensively with Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu and Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset. He also shows an affinity for Indian and Nordic music. He was notably featured on the album ''FiLM iNG'' by Norwegian jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft. Youssef has also played with Uri Caine, Jon Hassell, Markus Stockhausen, and Cuban pianist Omar Sosa. In 2001, he recorded ''Electric Sufi'' with Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish, who form the rhythm section of the band Living Colour. ''Incantation (Birds Requiem)'' is the sixth album under his name and the first for the OKeh label. As the London magazine Time Out admirably summarizes: ''The virtuoso Tunisian singer and oud player juxtaposes the ancient, mystical, and hypnotic music of Sufism with the texture of electric jazz.''
