Montmartre, 1964 / Dexter Gordon (Vinyle LP)

Description

King Neptune - Big Fat Butterfly - Manha De Carnival - Loose Walk - I Want More - Misty - Cheese Cake / Jazzhus Montmartre - Copenhagen, 1964 Listening to this album takes you back to the atmosphere and sound of Jazzhus Montmartre on a random night in the 1960s, immersing you in Dexter Gordon's enormous aura. Dexter's arrival in Copenhagen had a huge impact that left a lasting impression on the Danish jazz scene. He was handsome and well-dressed. His playing was superb, with a giant sound; his introductions and stage presence were unique and captivating. Moreover, Dexter felt that the Danish mentality was well-suited for playing and appreciating jazz. This live album is released for the first time and includes a range of stars performing at that iconic period in Copenhagen's jazz history. “Dexter Gordon settled in Denmark in the 60s. The recordings at Café Montmartre Jazzhus are top-notch. Here is an unreleased recording from 1964, two live captures at Jazzhus. Torrid evenings. Dexter never gave an average concert. It was always extraordinary (even when he had taken substances by the shovelful, as Henri Texier, who accompanied him, recently reminded me). In any case, according to Dizzy Gillespie's aphorism: "Dexter always started crooked, and it always ended well"! Here he is, at 6 feet 6 inches tall, with NHOP, Nils-Henning Orsted Pedersen (18 years old!) on double bass/Tete Montoliu (piano)/Alex Riel (drums). Each more unleashed than the last! Curiosity: Dexter sings on Big Fat Butterfly... Released in November 2020.” Bruno Pfeiffer - Libération - Ça va Jazzer (12/10/2020)
