For Matthew Doty, Deserta has always represented an exploration of a sonic universe that allows him to express a kaleidoscope of emotions without having to say too much. Through a patchwork of reverb-drenched textures—drone guitars, lingering synths, and driving percussion—the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist weaves tales of preoccupation, frustration, and catharsis that culminate in sweet resolution. On his new album Every Moment, Everything You Need, Matthew chronicles the kind of year we all dread, full of uncertainty, tension, and ongoing pressures, and transforms it into a celebration of perseverance. It's an essential reminder that we have the power to shape the stories we tell. Due to the pandemic, Matthew had to give up his studio and downsize much of his equipment to make space in his apartment to prepare for Deserta’s next chapter. Sharing the space with his wife and son, he and his partner are also essential healthcare workers, meaning the couple often had to alternate childcare, endure 13-hour days wearing PPE, and respond to people constantly calling with questions about ever-changing guidelines and protocols. Once the album's broad outlines were sketched, Matthew enlisted a number of collaborators to assemble his vision for the soundscape. James McAlister (Sufjan Stevens, The National, Taylor Swift) came in to play and record drums, while Caroline Lufkin (Mice Parade) wrote and sang on the ethereal "Where Did You Go." The record was mixed by Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Tame Impala, Mogwai, Interpol), and Chris Coady, producer for Beach House and Slowdive, handled engineering and co-production, making it the first time Dave Fridmann and Chris Coady have worked together on a project. While the vocals are more prominent than on previous albums, it's their association with the instrumental aspects that makes Every Moment, Everything You Need Deserta's most confident and assured album to date. A touching emotional candor combined with lingering riffs and tenacious rhythms allows Matthew Doty to not be afraid to dive deeper; an unrestrained approach that allows for a brilliant purge of turmoil and anxiety. By exposing these dark and exhaustive thoughts through crucial eddies and looping electronic soundscapes, it’s an album that is infinitely layered, with something new to discover with each enchanting listen.
