Death and Vanilla, the trio formed by Marleen Nilsson, Anders Hansson and Magnus Bodin, are back with a new album, "Flicker", to showcase their unique pop. The first single "Find Another Illusion" is a melancholic dream pop track with a catchy melodic line that inspires unwavering bravery. It's a song that builds to a powerful and swirling crescendo. Illustrated by a superb deconstructed album cover with a touch of irony, "Flicker" is a modern reflection on the difficult times we live in. Despite the crises, Death And Vanilla is reborn, revitalized by incorporating reggae dub influences, Can-esque motorized spirals, Philip Glass's modal meanderings, and the dreamier pop sounds of The Cure into their music. Added to this is a symphonic atmosphere reminiscent of bands like Spiritualized or Talking Heads under Brian Eno's guidance in the late 70s. "Looking Glass", the second single, opens with a deceptively slow introduction. It's an organic track that quickly becomes modal, layered with several strata under which Marleen Nilsson's evocative voice is hidden. Like a feverish Fleetwood Mac dream that lingers in a subconscious atmosphere of luscious melodies. In contrast, "Out For Magic", the hypnotic opening track, is a playful song with a jazz guitar that alternates between counterbalancing and supporting the main melody. Death And Vanilla gives the impression that everything is possible and yet nothing. The album emanates a glimmer of hope for everyone.
