In a scene of restless loners, everyone is in at least two bands. While Deadbeat Beat was actively asserting itself, Maria's light drumming kept time for long-time heroes, the outrageous Cherry and Alex, who played with trashpunk stalwart Tyvek. Even immersed in an extremely creative community, 'Deadbeat Beat' remained on a different path, characterized by complex writing that relies on more internal perspectives. While taking notes on the blackened guitar fuzz of their friends and neighbors, equal time was spent dissecting key records from Kevin Ayers, La Düsseldorf, Joni Mitchell, Julian Cope, The Clean and a litany of “rainy” pop music. Musically varied and lyrically harmonious, 'How Far' shows the band at the height of that strange bond, born from restless nights in shitty dives, which form the emotional foundation of nervously bustling, rising pop songs. Glendening's songs mostly played into the goal of affirming and maintaining a strange identity in an almost perfectly straight crowd.
