The group's third studio album, Buhloone Mindstate, released on September 21, 1993, saw De La Soul evolve into a new sound as they continued to grow stylistically and musically. There are several moments on the album that prove the group has matured. "I Be Blowin'" is an instrumental featuring saxophone played by Maceo Parker. Several other surprises follow: The introspective "I Am I Be" which shows De La Soul in its most self-referential form to date; "Long Island Wildin'" which features a collaboration with Japanese hip hop artists Kan Takagi (Major Force) and the trio Scha Dara Parr (SDP). The album's first single, "Breakadawn", uses a sample from Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It" and Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm". De La Soul collaborated for the first time with Guru of Gang Starr on "Patti Dooke" and MC Shortie No Mas who played a significant role on many tracks on the album and was featured in part on "In The Woods". The album ends with an old-school collaboration with Biz Markie on "Stone Age". Buhloone Mindstate was a great critical success, with Rolling Stone ranking it as one of the best hip hop albums of all time.
