In 2015, David Gilmour decided to undertake a series of concerts in the oldest venues in the world. The following year, he became the first artist, since the gladiators in 79 AD, to give a concert in front of an audience at the amphitheater of Pompeii. It was a return to Pompeii for David, having already had the opportunity to play there in 1971 during the filming of the legendary musical film, Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii by Adrian Maben. In Roman times, the amphitheater of Pompeii was known as a "Spectaculum." David specifically worked with his long-time collaborator, master of colors and lights, Marc Brickman to create a show worthy of the "Spectaculum." In the shadow of Vesuvius, forty-five years after having played there for the first time for Adrian Maben's film, Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, David Gilmour gave two spectacular concerts on July 7 and 8, 2016. These concerts were the first rock concerts to be played in front of an audience in the ancient Roman amphitheater, built in 90 BC and covered by ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. David Gilmour is to this day the only artist to have performed in front of an audience in the arena since the time of the gladiators, over 2000 years ago. Regarding these concerts in Pompeii, David Gilmour said, "It's a magical place. Coming back and seeing the stage and the arena gave me an immense emotion. It's a place filled with ghosts..." The concert film, David Gilmour: Live at Pompeii, was shot by director Gavin Elder in 4K and includes highlights from both concerts. The concert is an incredible audiovisual experience thanks to a giant circular cyclorama screen as well as lasers, pyrotechnic effects, and the extraordinary performances of a star orchestra. The film includes songs from David's musical beginnings to today, such as tracks from his last two top solo albums: Rattle That Lock and On an Island. Other solos and classics from Pink Floyd are included, such as Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, and One Of These Days, the only song also played by the band in 1971. Unreleased performances of Great Gig In The Sky from the album The Dark Side Of the Moon, a title rarely played solo by David, also took place during the two concerts.
