March 7th, 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of YOUNG AMERICANS, David Bowie's ninth studio album. On the very day of this anniversary, YOUNG AMERICANS will be reissued as a limited edition picture disc vinyl, accompanied by a poster. On this album, David Bowie once again broadened his musical horizons by embracing "plastic soul," which would give him his first US number one single, "FAME," co-written with John Lennon and Carlos Alomar, Bowie's guitarist at the time. This album was partly influenced by the "Philly Sound" and was recorded in Philadelphia at Sigma Sound Studios during a break in the DIAMOND DOGS tour, with a band including the faithful Mike Garson on keyboards, as well as the late Luther Vandross on vocals and David Sanborn on saxophone. During the sessions produced by Tony Visconti at Sigma Sound, David Bowie immersed himself in soul music and created a new alter-ego, The Gouster, a slang term for a stylish young person from the ghetto.
