David Bowie had planned to record the album \"the old-fashioned way\" by recording the band live in the studio, choosing the best takes, and releasing it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in 2001, the concept of a \"surprise\" album release and the technology to ensure such a launch were still far from perfected, making it impossible to release TOY instantly, as David Bowie had wished. In the meantime, Bowie did what he did best: moved on to something new, with a handful of new songs from the same sessions that would eventually form the HEATHEN album, released in 2002 and now recognized as one of the highlights of his career.\u003cbr\u003e\nTwenty years after its originally planned release, David Bowie's co-producer Mark Plati states: \"Toy is a time capsule captured in an atmosphere of joy, fire, and energy, with the sound of happy musicians playing.
