Dorian Gray in the making, a budding mutant searching for himself, David Bowie in 1969 was first and foremost a transcendental folk artist guided by his masters Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, and Syd Barrett. Inspired by Kubrick and his special odyssey, the chameleon slips into his first skin, that of a curly-haired astronaut strumming a twelve-string guitar and a beating heart, like a messenger from space.
