Description

The 'The `Mercury" Demos' box set will come in packaging replicating the original master tape box. It contains an LP, a photo print, two contact sheets, and liner notes signed by Mark Adams. The vinyl labels feature the EMIDISC acetate design found on `Spying Through A Keyhole and `Clareville Grove Demos. The song titles are handwritten by David Bowie.
To mark the 50th anniversary of `Space Oddity, David Bowie's first hit, and following the release of the `Spying Through A Keyhole and `Clareville Grove Demos 45-rpm box sets, Parlophone will soon release a new collection of recordings titled 'The Mercury" Demos'.
'The Mercury" Demos' brings together ten David Bowie recordings captured live in a single take in his apartment on a Revox tape recorder in spring 1969, with John `Hutch Hutchinson on guitar and vocals.
Available in an edited version in the Sound & Vision box set, the demo version of `Space Oddity is finally put back into its original context. The other nine recordings on this album are all previously unreleased. In addition to the original tracks composed by David Bowie, this session includes a cover of Roger Bunn's song `Life Is A Circus (also available in an earlier demo version in the `Clareville Grove Demos box set) and Lesley Duncan's `Love Song, which would be covered by Elton John on his album `Tumbleweed Connection. `Conversation Piece is announced as `a new song by Bowie and `Janine includes a 19-second sung passage to the tune of The Beatles' `Hey Jude.
This `Bowie & Hutch duo session was recorded at the request of Mercury Records A&R director Calvin Mark Lee, who wanted to send the tape to Bob Reno, the label manager. Calvin and Bob are mentioned on the tapes of this recording, and these demos helped Bowie secure an artist contract with Mercury Records. THE ``MERCURY DEMOS (1 x LP BOX SET)
