The first album by Dave McMurray at Blue Note 'Music Is Life' is in a way a reunion, given the long history that links the saxophonist to the label president Don Was. In creating this new album, McMurray first selected a list of strong original tracks and then took the time to choose classics from rock and R&B before starting to recruit musicians. With little keyboard and strings, the music reflects a sensitivity that highlights the leader. It is also evident here that McMurray is as experienced and inspired in a rock, R&B, funk, pop, or folk setting as when he plays hard bop. McMurray is known for his versatility thanks to his collaborations with many musicians from different backgrounds such as B.B. King, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Hallyday, Gladys Knight, Albert King, Nancy Wilson, KEM, Bootsy Collins, Herbie Hancock, Geri Allen, and Bob James.
