Description

After his album dedicated to the Cello Concerto, acclaimed by critics, Daniel Barenboim, passionate about Elgar, now turns to his Symphonies. The music of Andrew Elgar has significantly revived since the 1960s, aided by new recordings of his works. In recent years, some pieces have been performed worldwide. The second Symphony, discussed in this recording, was recorded in 2013 with the Staatskapelle Berlin. It was at the time dedicated by an American critic as "the tender Twilight of the Gods of the Edwardian era": a beautiful tribute to this piece which was composed on the occasion of the funeral of King Edward VII of England. Allusions to the famous funeral marches in the history of classical music are scattered throughout this movement: one can perceive the influence that Beethoven's 3rd Symphony may have had on Elgar's inspiration.
