Description

Recorded and released in 1970, this is Curtis Mayfield's first solo album. It contains all the ingredients that would make his reputation: a bottomless bass, wah-wah guitar riffs, thunderous brass, feline vocals and, above all, committed ("We the people...", "If there's a hell below" and its famous intro), reality-based, political lyrics. When one considers that "Curtis" was released 8 months before Marvin Gaye's acclaimed "What's Going On", one realizes how long this opus was underestimated. Nevertheless, from its release, its homogeneity, the impeccable work of Henry Gibson on congas and tombas, combined with the arrangements of Riley Hampton and Gary Slabo, made it a classic. The album was written and produced by Curtis Mayfield himself, who even afforded himself the luxury of releasing it on his own label. It was missing a reissue to match its quality, which Rhino Records took care of, having the good taste to add demo versions and instrumental tracks. To own and cherish.
