Description

The album: A vocal cord vibrates, the body resonates, and the scream breaks free, shaking everything in its path. "El Grito" (the scream), Cumbia Chicharra's 4th album, arrived just like that, from the bottom of the heart and at full power. Like an orgasm, a deliverance, a collective trance or a cry of resistance... a cry for every stage of life. The group's 8 musicians and sound engineer each have their own strong influences and personalities. It is by patiently forging their musical unity, unanimity, and complementarity that these new compositions were born. Cumbia as an epicenter, and a whole world to amplify the tremors: Caribbean, Andean, Afro-American, or oriental music, a love of dance, a taste for dub, rock, and electronics in a percussive trance. Each song asserts its autonomy and builds bridges: oriental delirium (Chikilin, Polleromax), brassy hip-hop (Amigo Publico), languid cumbia dub (Fugitivo) or shamanic (Grito Animal), percussion carnival (Dia Maldito), and at the central pivot, typical accordion cumbia (Guaton Feliz, Quien es). The group: La Cumbia Chicharra sensually clashes cumbia, Latin American rhythms, and urban and contemporary sounds. The Marseille group assembles its boundless influences for savory and explosive music. In the humidity of Afro-Latin music, Cumbia Chicharra lets out a cry of pleasure, from its home port of Marseille to the colorful hills of Valparaiso. It must be admitted that this Mediterranean collective knows how to ignite tropical rhythms: original cumbia happily imbues itself with new flavors, Afro-beat, funk, psychedelic chicha, brassy hip-hop, and sulphurous dub to fuse into a perfectly exhilarating urban potion. Propelled by the intoxicating crackle of cicadas (the "chicharras" in Spanish, a nod to the South American güiro), the Marseille armada travels the planet with its Mediterranean cumbia with Afro-Caribbean colors. And the conclusion is inescapable: at the confines of dance and trance, Cumbia Chicharra captivates crowds with its inventive, luxuriant, and brassy blend.
