On What's This?, CS Cleaners delivers eleven tracks of distorted, fluorescent art punk that denounce the absurdity of contemporary life. The band is influenced by the New York underground scene, from the eclectic first wave of CBGB to the mutations and deconstructions of no wave. But while the sound of CS Cleaners can sometimes be rooted in intense music, the band absolutely does not take itself seriously: What's This? is above all a dance album, even if its form is sufficiently unbridled for our era. The characters on What's This? are often prey to doubt and panic. Like the narcissistic musician on the single “Come & Go,” who panics at the idea of losing glory. Ben Petrosor infuses it with a pathetic dimension with lines like “if I swallow my pride, I'll split in two,” eliciting sympathy for an unsympathetic character in a nonetheless familiar situation. We witness various panic attacks set to music throughout What's This?. They stem from state surveillance exercised by social media, the pressures of living in an increasingly hostile city, and, of course, being overworked.
