Cranes is a dream pop/shoegaze band formed by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw, who became famous after a world tour with The Cure in 1992. After the influential label Dedicated closed in 1998, they took a two-year break, after which they created their own label, Dadaphonic. There, they released three studio albums between 2001 and 2008, of which this record is their first. Between 1986 and 1997, Cranes released a steady stream of records on Back! and of course Dedicated, and when the latter ceased operations, the Shaw siblings took a relatively long break from recording. Then, in 2001, they returned with a new bassist and drummer, their new label Dadaphonic, and a fantastic record to accompany it. A breath of fresh air, Future Songs serves as a bridge between their somewhat rough approach to 90s shoegaze and the electronic-infused sound of the 2000s. An impressive effort, especially considering that the Shaws recorded almost everything themselves.
