Nothing is ever simple with Connan Mockasin, and nothing should ever be simple with Monnan Cockasin. This enigmatic rule resonates more than ever on Jassbusters, his third album, the first in five years. An album outside conventions and labels that does not pick up where Caramel (2013) and its predecessor Forever Dolphin Love (2010) left off, but does not truly abandon them either. Jassbusters foreshadows a five-part melodrama titled Bostyn 'n Dobsyn, directed and performed by Connan. A project started 20 years ago with comics and short films. Jassbusters is the eclectic and electric soundtrack to this unpredictable narrative. Whether he twists musical genres for his own pleasure or collaborates with artists like James Blake (who might appear on one of the tracks), MGMT, John Cale, or Charlotte Gainsbourg, Connan Mockasin always works in a very mysterious way. After a tour with Radiohead and Neil & Liam Finn, the surreal New Zealander of R&B continues to build a cult around his theater — or rather spectacle — of life.
