More than a decade has passed since punk shook the British music scene to its foundations and triggered an eruption of independently produced records. The scene and a new generation of iconic artists began to embrace ambition and move towards increasingly larger crowds, working with bigger budgets and selling more copies, finding a place in the UK Top 40, venturing into the United States, and ultimately creating a mainstream audience now ready for credible guitar-tinged pop. Meanwhile, an underground revolution in clubs began to push towards the same commercial space, leading to an inevitable fusion of song aesthetics and the dance floor. "C90" perfectly captures the moment when these tribes began to merge. From the club-friendly opening rendition of "Polar Bear" by The Charlatans to The La's deliberately retro "Timeless Melody" and everything in between, it is the sound of a scene shedding its raincoats, dropping the acid, and aiming for domination. 1990 marked the beginning of a new decade where the indie scene was dominated by Madchester and the arrival of Shoegaze, with nods to grunge and what would become Britpop, as well as hints of proto-laddism peering through the cracks of a message. The sound of 1990, one could say, set the tone for the rest of the decade.
