New History Warfare Vol.3: To See More Light concludes the New History Warfare trilogy, which began in 2008, once again highlighting Colin Stetson's unparalleled qualities as a musician and composer. After playing with Tom Waits, TV on the Radio, Arcade Fire, Lou Reed, and Laurie Anderson, but especially after spending two years touring as Bon Iver's musician, Colin Stetson naturally welcomes Justin Vernon/Bon Iver on four tracks, with a different vocal approach on each song. The 15-minute track "To See More Light" is the longest song Colin Stetson has recorded to date, and certainly the most intense: a tour de force of arpeggios, breaths, and playing techniques... Justin Vernon's presence also gives the album a melancholic, even hymnal, feel with his cover of Washington Phillips' gospel song "What Are They Doing In Heaven Today" and "Among The Sef," where Justin sings a text written by Stetson. Colin Stetson masterfully juggles an avant-garde jazz playing style, pushing the boundaries of the instrument (Evan Parker, Mats Gustafsson) and noise/drone/minimalist music that encompasses genres like dark metal, post-rock, and contemporary electro (Tim Hecker, Ben Frost - the latter also participated in the album's mixing).
