The Colin Steele Quartet dives into the rich and moving universe of The Blue Nile, reinventing the cult band's sophisticated pop as a collection of late-night jazz ballads. The quartet, led by Scottish trumpeter Colin Steele, breathes new life into the tracks from Hats, the 1989 masterpiece, with elegance and sensitivity. Songs like "Easter Parade," "Heatwave," and "Let's Go Out Tonight" are adorned here with delicate phrasing, reimagined harmonies, and subtle rhythmic inflections. Steele's arrangements preserve the refined melancholy of the originals while infusing them with discreet funk touches and shades of improvisation, particularly on "Body & Soul" and "Headlights on the Parade." His fluid and expressive trumpet playing evokes the restrained intensity of Paul Buchanan's voice, which Steele likens to the tonal depth of Miles Davis. Recorded in a single day at Castlesound Studios – the very place where The Blue Nile crafted their iconic albums – this album marks the final installment of a jazz cover trilogy, following tributes to the Pearlfishers and Joni Mitchell. Alongside Steele, the ensemble features Calum Gourlay (double bass), Alyn Cosker (drums), and Dave Milligan (piano, arrangements), under the artistic direction of Stuart Hamilton. The project also includes a version of Buchanan's solo track, "Mid Air" – with his personal blessing.
