Hailing from the United States, soul music became a major genre in the mid-1960s. In France, Claude François, impressed by the string of hits from Detroit's legendary Tamla-Motown label, strove to become one of its first promoters.
Presented in French adaptations, the pulsating rhythms and irresistible melodies of the Four Tops, the Supremes, and other soul music pioneers captivated France. On stage, Claude François also adopted the spectacular choreography of his transatlantic role models and surrounded himself with the Claudettes, dancer-chorus girls echoing Ike & Tina Turner's famous Ikettes.
