Twelve years after his first volume, Chris Thile has recorded a second album of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for violin, with a decidedly more personal approach. This time, he takes liberties with the scores and chooses to perform them in places that are meaningful to him, some of them unexpected: Reservoir Studios and Tompkins Square Park in New York, the Farrell Recital Hall at Murray State University (Kentucky), and Blackberry Farm in Tennessee. Rather than trying to imagine whether Bach would have approved of his work, as he did for the first volume, Thile focused on producing a disc that reflects his own identity and that he loves, convinced of the value of his own aesthetic choices.
