Description

Originating from Quibdo, the main city on the Colombian Pacific coast and the capital of the Choco region, CHOC QUIB TOWN is one of the hottest phenomena in recent years. It is also one of the most successful attempts to reclaim Afro-Colombian popular music by the younger generation. The trio (Tostao, Goya & Flow) enjoys mixing traditional rhythms from the Pacific coast such as bunde, currulao, aguabajo, and bambazú with electronic elements of hip hop, funk, Jamaican reggae, and salsa. This remarkable fusion has already made the whole country dance with the release of Somos Pacificos, the group's first album released in 2006 and produced by the innovative duo Ivan Benavidez (Carlos Vives) and Richard Blair (Sidestepper). An album that has since been considered in Colombia as an anthem for Afro-Colombian culture because beyond the music, the group feels invested with a real mission, that of recognizing a culture that happens to be one of the most forgotten among minority peoples in Colombia. Without real access to fundamental rights, whether social, economic, or political, Afro-Colombians, like indigenous people, thirst for a recognized existence. A commitment that is expressed through very strong lyrics and a unique style that projects the Pacific culture of the country into the future. A process relatively close to that of Andy Palacio in Belize for the recognition of Garifuna culture. Nominated for the LATIN GRAMMY AWARDS in 2009, CHOC QUIB TOWN has already received a triumphant welcome in the United States, has recorded with French rapper OXMO PUCCINO, and is preparing to sweep across Europe with their exceptional show.
