Fresques sur les parois secrètes du crâne is the second album by the duo Cheval de frise, one of the most paradoxical groups rock has ever produced. An elusive, baroque-sounding record, it was recorded at Black Box studio in 2002, then originally released on CD on the RuminanCe label in 2003. It is now being re-released by the New York label Computer Students™ and is available for the first time on vinyl. The 10 tracks that make up the album have been remastered by Carl Saff for the occasion. Evoking both the cubist digressions of the most learned jazz and the paroxysms of flamenco, with just a nylon guitar flexing its muscles on the anvils of the darkest metal, Cheval de frise composes a frightened, highly aesthetic rock 'n' roll that is at once half-ugly, with a transfigured ugliness. Transfigured by what? The question remains open, as do almost all the questions that repeated listening to Fresques never ceases to raise.
