The folk music origins of Haden are never far away, just like the blues nuances, a simplicity related to folk, which are present in Hall's approach. At first glance, this tandem may seem unusual: the dean of avant-garde double bass associated with a guy who, for decades, has practically defined 'mainstream jazz guitar.' But Charlie Haden and Jim Hall have much more in common than you might imagine. Each brings to the table over five decades of jazz history, and each brings out the best in what the other does in this most intimate context, the duo. Together, Haden and Hall bring a thunderous intimacy that they gently push to the extreme with a series of live duos recorded at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1990, where our duetists set fire to a repertoire of standards. The two gentlemen have swing: Haden with that BIG flexible, supple, and elastic sound, Hall with those agile yet carefully thought-out lines, and often crystalline notes.
