Five years after her debut album (also released by Born Losers Records, a Philadelphia label), Catherine Moan's unique blend of 80s new wave, 2000s synthpop, and contemporary electronic music reaches a new dimension, with production and songwriting far surpassing her early work. While the album may initially seem like a collection of light pop tracks, a more attentive listen reveals lyrics responding to the psychological attacks orchestrated by the media, anti-LGBTQ+ political campaigns in the United States, and her struggle to carve out a path. A deeply personal album driven by optimistic instrumentation and rhythms, CM Ultra was certainly worth the wait.
